There’s a rhythm to life here in the Garden Route that you don’t find in the city. It’s slower, sunnier, and smells like fynbos and sea salt. If you’re staying with us at the off-grid homestead, you’ll want to plan a few days just for wandering. Not for ticking off sights, but for the good stuff: local markets, handmade crafts, and long, lazy coffee stops.
Saturday Morning: The Wilderness Village Market
Start your weekend right at the Wilderness Village Market, held every Saturday morning (usually 8am to 1pm) on the lawns near the river. It’s a small, friendly affair—exactly how a market should be. You’ll find fresh sourdough, local honey, and strong coffee from a caravan that’s become a local institution. Grab a breakfast bun and sit on the grass. Dogs are welcome, and you’ll see plenty of them.
Look out for the stall selling handmade ceramics—mugs that feel good in your hands, glazed in ocean blues and forest greens. Perfect for taking home a piece of the coast.
Craft & Curio Stops on the Main Road
Wilderness’s main road isn’t a strip mall. It’s a collection of quirky, independent shops. Here are the ones worth your time:
- Kaaimans River Craft Co. – A small gallery featuring local painters, woodturners, and wire artists. The owner is a wealth of knowledge about the area’s creative scene.
- Wild Things Gifts – For handmade soaps, beaded jewellery, and woven baskets. Great for picking up gifts that aren’t mass-produced.
- The Book Nook – A second-hand bookshop with a cat that sleeps on the till. Swap a novel, buy a local field guide, and stay for a chat.
Slow-Living Coffee & Lunch Spots
You can’t rush a good meal. At The Fat Fish, the coffee is strong and the view over the lagoon is slow-moving in the best way. Sit on the deck, watch the canoes drift by, and order the calamari—it’s the freshest in town.
For a more rustic stop, head to Serendipity Tea Garden, tucked behind the main road. It’s a shaded, leafy spot with homemade scones, lemonade, and a menu that changes with the season. The owners grow their own herbs, and the garden is a haven for birds and butterflies.
Make a Day of It: Hoekwil & the Karatara Route
If you have a full day, drive the scenic loop to Hoekwil (about 15 minutes from Wilderness). This little village is a slow-living hotspot. Visit the Hoekwil Country Market (first Saturday of the month) for organic veg, preserves, and live folk music. Then, continue to Karatara, where you’ll find the Karatara Craft Hub—a community project selling beautiful beadwork, recycled glass art, and woven goods. It’s a meaningful stop that supports local artisans directly.
Back to the Homestead
After a day of markets and browsing, there’s nothing better than returning to the quiet of our off-grid homestead. Light a fire, pour a glass of local wine, and unpack your finds. That’s the Wilderness way: slow, thoughtful, and full of small treasures.
