The Best Sunrise and Sunset Spots on the Garden Route
There’s a reason we wake up before the kettle boils here at Wildfarm Homestead. The Garden Route runs east to west, which means you get the sun rising out of the Indian Ocean and setting behind the Outeniqua mountains. You don’t need a fancy viewpoint – you just need to know where to stand. Here are the spots we send our guests to, in order of “worth the early alarm”.
Sunrise: The Wilderness Beach Boardwalk
Park at the main beach car park in Wilderness (next to the Saloon pub) and walk the wooden boardwalk towards the Kaaimans River mouth. At first light, the sandbar mirrors the sky in pink and orange. You’ll often have the beach to yourself, except for a few local dogs doing their morning zoomies. Bring a coffee from Il de Café on the main road – they open at 6am in summer.
If you want a higher vantage point, drive up to the Map of Africa viewpoint on the old George road. The river bends look like the continent, and the morning mist sits low in the valley. It’s a 10-minute drive from our off-grid homestead, so you can still be back in time for our farm breakfast.
Sunset: Gericke’s Point, Sedgefield
This is the one we tell everyone not to miss. Gericke’s Point is a sandstone outcrop at the mouth of the Swartvlei lagoon. You walk across the sandbank at low tide – check the tide table at the Sedgefield info office – and climb onto the rock shelf. The sun drops straight into the sea, and the lagoon turns gold behind you.
It’s a 20-minute drive from Wildfarm, and the walk takes about 15 minutes each way. Wear old sneakers – the rocks are sharp. After sunset, head to Zucchini in Sedgefield for a wood-fired pizza. They’re dog-friendly on the patio.
Sunrise: The Goukamma River Mouth
For a quieter option, drive to the Goukamma Nature Reserve near Buffels Bay. The river mouth opens to the sea, and the dunes catch the first light. You’ll see bushbuck and maybe a fish eagle. It’s a flat, easy walk – perfect with a thermos and a blanket. This is also where we walk our own dogs on our days off.
Sunset: The Knysna Heads (Western Head)
Everyone goes to the Eastern Head viewpoint, but the western side (via Brenton Road) gives you the sun setting over the lagoon with the Heads in silhouette. There’s a small parking area at the end of the road, and a short path to the cliff edge. It’s dramatic, but keep a hold of your hat and your dog – the wind can be strong.
Afterwards, stop at Brenton on Sea general store for a soft serve and watch the light fade over the water.
Practical Notes for Early Risers
- Seasons: In summer (Dec-Feb), sunrise is around 5:30am and sunset around 8pm. In winter (Jun-Aug), sunrise is 7:15am – much kinder.
- Weather: The Garden Route is famous for four seasons in one day. If the coast is cloudy, drive 10km inland – the mountains often clear.
- Dogs: All these spots are dog-friendly on a lead, except the Knysna Heads cliff path. Keep your pooch close.
- Stay: You can walk to the Wilderness boardwalk from our off-grid homestead in about 25 minutes. We’ll point you in the right direction with a map and a flask.
The best light is always the one you actually get out of bed for. Come stay with us, and we’ll tell you which spot is firing that morning – we check the sky before we even pour the coffee.
