Best Sunrise and Sunset Spots on the Garden Route
The Garden Route does not do anything halfway — least of all its light. Whether you are chasing a pink-and-gold dawn over the Indian Ocean or watching the Outeniqua Mountains go purple at dusk, this stretch of coastline serves up some of the best skies in South Africa. Here are our favourite spots, plus a few tips from life at our off-grid homestead near Wilderness.
Sunrise Spots
- Wilderness Beach: A short drive from Wildfarm Backpackers, this long stretch of sand faces east. Arrive early, walk to the quieter end, and watch the sun rise straight out of the sea. Dolphins are a common bonus.
- Map of Africa viewpoint: Perched above the Kaaimans River, this lookout gives you a bird’s-eye view of the river mouth catching first light. It is a photographer’s dream.
- Knysna Heads: The eastern Head is the classic spot. Get there before the crowds, breathe in the salt air, and watch the light spill through the gap between the heads.
- Storms River Mouth: Further east in Tsitsikamma, the suspension bridges and rugged cliffs turn gold at dawn. Worth the early alarm.
Sunset Spots
- Brenton-on-Sea: West-facing and mellow, this little village is perfect for an evening stroll with the dogs. The sun sinks behind the hills and the whole bay glows.
- Buffels Bay: A quiet beach with rock pools and a lagoon. Bring a blanket, a flask, and let the kids and dogs run while the sky does its thing.
- Thesen Island, Knysna: Grab a table at a waterfront spot, order something cold, and watch the sun set over the lagoon. Easy, social, and reliably beautiful.
- Victoria Bay: A small, sheltered bay near George that catches the last light beautifully. Surfers often stay out until dark.
- Our own homestead: Honestly, some of the best sunsets happen right here — off-grid, surrounded by fynbos, with our resident dogs snoozing at your feet and the braai fire starting to glow.
When to Go
Summer (November to March) gives you long, warm evenings and early sunrises — perfect for beach sunsets. Winter (June to August) brings dramatic skies, fewer crowds, and the chance of whales along the coast. Autumn and spring are the sweet spots: mild weather, quiet beaches, and that soft, golden light photographers chase.
Practical Tips
- Check sunrise and sunset times — they shift a lot between seasons.
- Bring a headlamp for walking back in the dark.
- Pack a flask of coffee or a sundowner — there are no shops at most viewpoints.
- Keep dogs on leads near roads and other people, and always clean up after them.
- Respect the environment: no fires on beaches, take your rubbish home.
