Ask anyone who has driven the N2 between Mossel Bay and Storms River and they will tell you the same thing: there is nowhere else quite like it. You can surf at Victoria Bay in the morning, hike through ancient yellowwood forest at Wilderness by lunch, and watch the sun drop behind the Outeniqua Mountains from a farm stoep by evening. The Towns Have Real Character
This is not a route of identical petrol stations and chain motels. Places like Knysna, Sedgefield, Plettenberg Bay and Wilderness each have their own flavour. You will find farmers’ markets, proper coffee, fresh line fish and locals who still wave at strangers. Slow down and stay a few nights in one spot rather than racing the whole route in a day. The Garden Route rewards the unhurried.
Wildlife and Dogs Welcome
Where else can you spot dolphins from a cliff path, hear hadeda and loerie in the same morning, and meet a farm dog who insists on joining your hike? - Autumn (Mar–May): Quieter roads, calm seas, perfect hiking weather.
- Winter (Jun–Aug): Whale season in Hermanus and Plett, cosy fires, lower rates.
- Spring (Sep–Nov): Fynbos erupts, whales linger, and the whole route smells like flowers.
It Is Affordable and Accessible
You do not need a 4×4 or a fortune. A reliable car, a sense of curiosity and a willingness to take the gravel detour now and then is enough. Fuel is reasonable, camping and backpacking keep costs down, and the best viewpoints cost nothing at all.
