Day Trips From Wilderness: Knysna, Plett, Tsitsikamma

Day Trips from Wilderness: Knysna, Plett & the Tsitsikamma

Wilderness is the kind of place that makes you want to stay put. The lagoon, the forest, the endless beach – it’s easy to sink into the rhythm of the homestead and never leave. But if you’re feeling the itch to explore, the Garden Route hands you three absolute gems, all within a comfortable day’s drive. Here’s the honest, local lowdown on making the most of each.

Knysna: The Lagoon Town (45 Minutes)

Knysna is the bustling older sibling to Wilderness. It’s got the vibe, the food, and the famous Heads. Skip the mall, head straight for the waterfront, and grab a table at Freshline for the best seafood pasta in town. If you have a dog with you (and let’s be honest, you probably do), the walk along the Thesen Islands boardwalk is perfect and pooch-friendly.

  • Best for: A foodie lunch, boutique shopping, and the Knysna Heads viewpoint.
  • Route tip: Take the old pass (N2) for the view, come back via the scenic Kaaiman’s River bridge if you want a quick swim stop.
  • Season watch: Spring (Sept-Nov) brings the Knysna Oyster Festival, but also the crowds. Winter is quiet and misty – very moody.

Plettenberg Bay: Beach Perfection (1 Hour)

Plett is all about the sand. Robberg Beach is the main stretch, but the real magic is the Robberg Nature Reserve walk. It’s a 5.5km circular hike with seals, dolphins, and views that make you forget your phone exists. It’s a moderate walk, so leave the old dogs at the homestead for this one. After the hike, hit Lookout Deck for a burger and a cold one on the deck.

  • Best for: Hiking, swimming, and whale watching (June-Nov).
  • Route tip: The N2 is fast, but the old Kranshoek road is a winding, scenic alternative – just don’t take a trailer.
  • Pro move: Pack a picnic and eat on the rocks at the Point. You’ll thank me.

Tsitsikamma: Forest & Gorges (1.5 Hours)

This is where the Garden Route turns wild. The Storms River Mouth section of the National Park is non-negotiable. The suspension bridge walk is short, easy, and jaw-dropping. If you’re fit, the Waterfall Trail (6km one way) is the best bang for your buck – you’ll have the forest to yourself by mid-morning. Afterwards, stop at Marilyn’s Diner in Storms River village for a massive, honest breakfast. You’ve earned it.

  • Best for: Forest hikes, kayaking up the gorge, and raw coastal power.
  • Route tip: It’s a straight shot on the N2, but leave early – the park gets busy by 10am.
  • Weather check: This is the wettest patch of the Garden Route. Always bring a rain jacket, even in summer.

Back to the Homestead

After a long day of driving and exploring, there’s nothing better than the quiet hum of the off-grid homestead. The solar lights come on, the fire pit crackles, and the dogs are waiting for their evening walk along the river. You don’t need to see everything in one day. Pick one, go slow, and come home to the calm. That’s the Wilderness way.
