Day Trips From Wilderness: Knysna, Plett, Tsitsikamma

Day Trips from Wilderness: Knysna, Plettenberg Bay & Tsitsikamma

From our off-grid homestead on the edge of Wilderness, the Garden Route unfolds in both directions along the N2. You can base yourself here, sleep to the sound of frogs and cicadas, and still tick off the coast’s big names in a few easy day trips. Here’s how we’d do it.

Knysna: Oysters, Forests and a Famous Heads

Knysna is about 40 minutes east of Wilderness, an easy half-day or full-day outing. Start at the Knysna Heads for the classic view where the lagoon meets the sea, then wander the Waterfront for fresh oysters and a cold drink. If you’ve got legs to stretch, the Garden Route National Park at Diepwalle offers shaded forest walks under ancient yellowwoods — look out for the elusive Knysna elephant (you probably won’t see one, but the forest is worth it anyway).

  • Eat: oysters at the Waterfront, or a farm-style lunch on the way home
  • Do: Knysna Heads viewpoint, Featherbed Nature Reserve, forest walks at Diepwalle
  • Drive: roughly 40 minutes from Wilderness

Plettenberg Bay: Beaches, Whales and Dogs

Plett is about an hour further east and rewards a full day. In whale season (roughly June to November) you can often spot southern right whales from the cliffs at Robberg. The Robberg Nature Reserve hike is one of the best coastal walks in the country — bring water and proper shoes. For something gentler, Central Beach and Lookout Beach are perfect for a swim and a lazy picnic.

If you’re travelling with your dog, Plett has some dog-friendly stretches, but always check local signage. Back at our homestead, our resident dogs are usually first to greet guests at the gate.

Tsitsikamma: Big Trees, Bigger Views

Tsitsikamma is the long haul — around two hours from Wilderness — so leave early. The Storms River Mouth is the headline: the suspension bridges over the gorge, the crashing swell, and the famous Otter Trail start point. The Big Tree and the canopy tours are great if you’ve got kids or adrenaline to burn. This one’s a proper day out, so pack lunch and take your time on the return drive.

  • Don’t miss: Storms River suspension bridges and the Mouth viewpoint
  • Good for: hikers, photographers, families
  • Tip: go on a clear day — the coastal views are the whole point

Seasons and Practical Notes

Summer (December–February) is warm and busy; book activities early. Autumn and spring are our favourite — quieter roads, mild days, and good whale-watching into winter. Winter can be wet, but the forests are lush and the fireside evenings at the homestead are hard to beat.

Whether you’re chasing oysters in Knysna or standing on a Tsitsikamma bridge with the sea roaring below, Wilderness makes a brilliant, quiet base. Come stay off-grid with us and explore the Garden Route at your own pace — book your stay at Wildfarm Homestead.
