Why the Garden Route Is the Best Road Trip in the World
We might be biased, living off-grid on a homestead just outside Wilderness, but we’ve hosted travellers from every continent, and the verdict is always the same: nowhere else packs so much into so few kilometres. The Garden Route runs roughly 300km along South Africa’s southern coast, from Mossel Bay to Storms River, and it delivers mountains, forests, lagoons, beaches and wildlife without you ever needing to rush.
It’s Short Enough to Actually Enjoy
Most famous road trips — Route 66, the Ring Road, the Great Ocean Road — demand weeks. The Garden Route rewards you in four or five days, or a slow two weeks if you’re smart. That means less time behind the wheel and more time swimming, hiking and eating. From our base at Wildfarm Homestead, you’re perfectly positioned to explore it in either direction.
The Landscapes Change Constantly
Within an hour you can go from indigenous forest to fynbos-covered mountains to a warm Indian Ocean beach. Highlights include:
- The Knysna Heads and its lagoon
- Tsitsikamma’s suspension bridges and ancient yellowwoods
- The Cango Caves and Swartberg Pass near Oudtshoorn
- Wilderness beach and the Touw River estuary
- Robberg Peninsula in Plettenberg Bay — a proper coastal hike
Wildlife You Won’t Find Elsewhere
This is one of the few places on earth where you can spot whales from a cliff path (June to November), see dolphins surfing the break at Wilderness, and meet a Knysna seahorse in the estuary. Inland, there are elephants at Addo further east, ostriches in the Klein Karoo, and countless birds — including the Knysna turaco, that flash of green and red in the canopy. Our resident dogs, of course, consider themselves the true local wildlife.
Food and People
The Garden Route is farm country. Expect fresh oysters in Knysna, cheese and charcuterie on the Prince Alfred’s Pass, berries in season, and honest farm stalls selling biltong and roosterkoek. The people are warm, the pace is slow, and strangers still wave from their cars.
When to Go
Summer (December to February) is hot and busy — book ahead. Autumn (March to May) is arguably perfect: warm days, quiet roads, good whale-watching starting. Winter (June to August) brings rain and cosy firesides, but also the best prices and dramatic seas. Spring (September to November) is green, floral and glorious.
