The Ultimate Garden Route Road Trip Itinerary
The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s great drives — roughly 300km of forest, coastline, lagoons and mountain passes strung between Mossel Bay and Storms River. You can rush it in two days, but you’ll miss the point. Give it four to five nights and you’ll actually feel the rhythm of the place. Here’s how we’d do it from our off-grid homestead near Wilderness.
Day 1: Mossel Bay to Wilderness
Start in Mossel Bay, stretch your legs at the Point, then follow the N2 east. Skip the toll road where you can and take the old George–Knysna road for the views. Stop at Victoria Bay — a tiny surf cove that feels like a secret. Arrive in Wilderness by late afternoon. Check in at Wildfarm Backpackers, where the homestead runs on solar and rainwater, and the resident dogs will escort you to your spot. Sunset over Island Lake is the welcome you deserve.
Day 2: Wilderness and the lakes
Walk the Half Collared Kingfisher Trail to a waterfall, or paddle the Touw River by canoe. Birders should watch for fish eagles and Knysna turacos. Lunch at a local spot in the village — fresh line fish, chips, and a cold drink. Evening braai at the homestead, fire lit, dogs dozing.
Day 3: Knysna and the Heads
Twenty minutes east and you’re in Knysna. Walk the Heads viewpoint, then wander the waterfront for oysters. If you’re feeling active, mountain bike the Harkerville forest trails. Overnight options are plentiful, but we’re biased — base yourself at Wildfarm and day-trip.
Day 4: Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma
Push east to Plettenberg Bay for beaches and the Robberg Peninsula hike (allow three hours, it’s worth every step). Continue to Tsitsikamma for the Storms River Mouth — suspension bridges, crashing surf, and ancient yellowwoods. Book the Storms River mouth walk in advance in peak season.
Day 5: Return or linger
Drive back west through the passes — Prince Alfred’s Pass if you have a capable vehicle and time. Or stay another night and do nothing but swim, read, and watch the dogs patrol the homestead.
Practical notes
- Best seasons: September to April for warm, dry weather; May to August for quieter roads and cosy fires.
- Fuel up in George and Plettenberg Bay — stations thin out between.
- Book ahead in December and January; the route fills fast.
- Dogs: our homestead dogs are friendly but keep your own pets leashed near wildlife.
