Family-Friendly Wilderness: Beaches, Birds And Bikes

Family-Friendly Wilderness: Beaches, Birds and Bikes

Wilderness is one of those rare Garden Route towns where kids can be kids and parents can actually relax. Between the wide beaches, the lakes and the forest trails, there’s enough to fill a week without ever sitting in traffic. Here’s how we’d spend it from our off-grid homestead base at Wildfarm Backpackers.

Beaches for small feet

Wilderness Beach is long, flat and patrolled in season, which makes it the easy choice for young families. The lagoon side is calmer for toddlers, and the dunes give older kids somewhere to run. Further along, Gericke’s Point and Leentjiesklip are quieter, with rock pools that keep little ones busy for hours. Pack a windbreak — the afternoon breeze is real.

Birds and the lakes

The Wilderness lakes are part of a Ramsar wetland site, so birdlife is genuinely special. Take the Malachite Bird Hide on the Touw River for kingfishers, herons and the odd fish eagle. The Kingfisher Trail boardwalk is pram-friendly for the first stretch and a good early-morning walk before the heat. Bring binoculars — the kids will spot more than you expect.

Bikes and forest tracks

The old Seven Passes road and the forest jeep tracks around Hoekwil suit family cycling — gentle gradients, shade and almost no traffic. The Half Collared Kingfisher Trail is better on foot, but the gravel roads linking the lakes are ideal for a slow family ride. Hire bikes in town if you’re not travelling with your own.

Food and practicalities

  • Stock up at the Saturday market in Sedgefield or the local Wilderness deli for picnic supplies.
  • Pizza and pancakes in town are reliable kid-pleasers; book ahead in December.
  • Best seasons: October to April for beach days, May to August for quiet trails and whale-watching from the cliffs.
  • Dogs are welcome on many trails and at our homestead, where our resident dogs are part of the furniture — just keep leads handy near the lakes.

Our off-grid homestead runs on solar and rainwater, with space for kids to roam and chickens to greet. It’s a short drive to the beaches and the bird hides, and a world away from the rush. Come see why families keep coming back to Wilderness.
