The Best Sunrise and Sunset Spots on the Garden Route
There’s something about the Garden Route light that makes even the most jaded traveller stop mid-sentence. Maybe it’s the way the Indian Ocean catches the early sun, or how the Outeniqua Mountains glow amber at dusk. Whatever it is, if you’re chasing golden hours between Mossel Bay and Storms River, here are the spots worth setting an alarm for.
Sunrise Spots
- Wilderness Beach: A short drive from our off-grid homestead, this long stretch of sand is magic at first light. Dolphins often cruise the backline, and the Touw River mouth reflects the sky like glass.
- Knysna Heads: Get there early to beat the crowds. Watching the sun rise between the two headlands, with the lagoon waking up below, is a proper Garden Route rite of passage.
- Robberg Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay: Hike the first section of the peninsula before sunrise. You’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over the bay as the light spills across the water. Bring a headlamp for the path.
- Storms River Mouth: If you’re heading east, the suspension bridges at sunrise are quiet, misty and unforgettable.
Sunset Spots
- Map of Africa, Wilderness: A quick walk from the roadside viewpoint, this is where paragliders land and locals gather with a sundowner. The view over the Kaaimans River valley is ridiculous.
- Brenton-on-Sea: The rocky shoreline here faces west just enough to catch a proper blaze. Our dogs love the evening walk, and so will you.
- Buffels Bay, Knysna: Sheltered, calm and perfect for a late swim while the sky turns pink.
- Victoria Bay: A tiny cove with a big sky. Surfers, families and photographers all jostle for the same patch of grass at dusk, and it’s worth it.
Practical Tips
Sunrise in summer is around 05:30, sunset closer to 19:30. Winter shifts things earlier, so check times before you go. Always pack a jacket, the coast gets breezy, and never leave valuables in your car at trailheads.
If you’re basing yourself at Wildfarm Homestead, you’re perfectly placed between Wilderness and Sedgefield, meaning most of these spots are within a 20-minute drive. Our off-grid homestead runs on solar and rainwater, so early mornings here are quiet, dark and full of stars, the best possible start to a sunrise mission.
