Off-Grid Stay In Wilderness: What To Expect

Off-Grid Stay in Wilderness: What to Actually Expect

So you’re thinking of switching off the grid for a few days in the Garden Route. Good call. But let’s be honest – “off-grid” means different things to different people. At Wildfarm Homestead, we’re not talking about roughing it in a tent with no coffee. We’re talking about a comfortable, solar-powered homestead where the only thing you’ll miss is the hum of the city.

Power: The Solar Reality

We run on sunlight. During the day, the panels soak up the Garden Route sun, and by evening you’ve got warm lights, a hot shower, and enough juice to charge your phone and camera. But here’s the honest bit – if you’re planning to run a hairdryer, a gaming laptop, and a kettle all at once, you’ll be disappointed. This is a place to charge your devices, not your entire house. Bring a power bank for long hikes; it’s a small price for sleeping under a sky full of stars.

Water: Rainwater and the Touws River

Your water comes from the sky and the river. We filter our rainwater for drinking, and it tastes better than anything from a plastic bottle. For washing, we use river water, which is soft and leaves your skin feeling different – in a good way. Be mindful: we’re in a water-scarce area, so quick showers are the norm. It’s a small shift in habit, and you’ll leave with a new respect for every drop.

The Rhythm of the Day

Without constant notifications, your day starts to follow the light. Wake up to the sound of Knysna loeries and the dogs barking at nothing. Make coffee on the gas stove, sit on the stoep, and watch the mist lift off the Outeniqua Mountains. Midday is for swimming in the river or walking the 5km to the Wilderness beach. Evenings are for braai, board games, and early nights. It sounds simple, and it is – that’s the point.

What to Bring (and What to Leave)

  • Bring: a headlamp (for midnight loo trips), warm socks (even in summer, the evenings cool down), and your own reusable water bottle.
  • Leave: your blow dryer, your ego, and any expectations of 24/7 Wi-Fi. We have signal, but it’s patchy – and that’s a feature, not a bug.

Getting Around

We’re 3km from the N2, so you’re not in the middle of nowhere. You can walk to the village for coffee at Serendipity or drive 10 minutes to the Wilderness trails. But once you’re here, you’ll find you don’t want to leave. The dogs will keep you company on the lawn, and the cows will stare at you like you’re the strange one.

The Verdict

An off-grid stay at Wildfarm Homestead isn’t about deprivation. It’s about reconnecting – to the river, the fynbos, the fire, and to yourself. You’ll leave with sand in your shoes, a tan on your nose, and a quiet mind. That’s the real promise of the Garden Route, and we’re just the ones holding the gate open.

Come see us. The kettle’s always on (gas, of course).
