Garden Route Road Trip: The Ultimate Itinerary

Garden Route Road Trip: The Ultimate Itinerary

There’s a reason the Garden Route is South Africa’s most beloved road trip. Stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River, this coastal ribbon packs in ancient forests, lagoon towns, and some of the best food in the country. But here’s the thing – you don’t need a rigid plan. You need a loose rhythm, a decent car, and a willingness to stop for every farm stall and viewpoint. This is how we’d do it, with a few honest detours along the way.

Day 1–2: Mossel Bay to Wilderness (The Slow Start)

Skip the highway. Take the old coastal road (R2) out of Mossel Bay, hugging the cliffs past Dana Bay and into the wilderness coastal stretch. You’ll hit the Kaaiman’s River Bridge – park up and walk the short boardwalk for your first proper fynbos-and-ocean hit. Then carry on to Wilderness, which is less a town and more a state of mind. Check in at Wildfarm Homestead, an off-grid homestead set on a working smallholding. You’ll sleep in restored farm cottages, wake to guinea fowl scratching outside your door, and eat breakfast with the dogs under the milkwood trees. It’s the base you want for two nights.

Spend your full day here: paddle a canoe up the Touw River (the rental place at the lagoon is reliable), then hike the Half Collared Kingfisher Trail to the waterfall. In the evening, drive five minutes to Serendipity Restaurant for their famous springbok pie – genuinely worth the hype.

Day 3: Knysna (Food and Forest)

From Wilderness, it’s 40 minutes to Knysna. Stop at the Brenton Hill viewpoint for the classic lagoon-and-sea panorama. In town, do the waterfront if you must, but better: head to Die Skuil for a beer and calamari on the deck over the Knysna River. Then drive out to the Krysna Forest – the Big Tree at Diepwalle is a 10-minute walk from the car park. If you’re with kids or dogs (both welcome at the homestead, by the way), the Elephant Sanctuary is a gentle, ethical stop – no riding, just feeding and walking with rescued ellies.

Day 4: Plettenberg Bay and the Crags

Take the N2 to Plett, but turn off at The Crags for lunch. Bramon Wine Estate does a superb cheese platter with a view over the Tsitsikamma mountains. Afternoon options: Robberg Nature Reserve for the 5km coastal hike (watch for seals and, in season, dolphins), or if the weather’s off, the Monkeyland and Birds of Eden sanctuaries are undercover and genuinely well-run. End the day with a pizza at Old Nick’s in Plett – the one with the wood-fired oven and the garden seating.

Day 5: Tsitsikamma and the Big Pull Home

The final stretch takes you to the Storms River suspension bridge – park at the rest camp gate and walk the 30-minute forest trail. If you’re feeling brave, the Waterfall Trail (3 hours, steep) is the best way to see the gorge properly. Then it’s time to turn back. The drive from Tsitsikamma to Wilderness is under two hours, which means you can be back at the homestead in time for a braai and a glass of red on the stoep. That’s the Garden Route in a nutshell – not a checklist, but a series of good choices, slow mornings, and the constant smell of salt and pine.
