Day Trips From Wilderness: Knysna, Plett, Tsitsikamma

Day Trips from Wilderness: Knysna, Plett & Tsitsikamma

One of the best things about basing yourself at our off-grid homestead in Wilderness is the location. You get the quiet, the forest birds, and the sound of the Touw River at night—but you’re also smack-bang in the middle of the Garden Route’s greatest hits. Fill the tank, pack a cooler, and take the dogs (yes, they’re welcome on most of these adventures). Here’s how to do three classic day trips without the rush.

Knysna: The Lagoon & The Heads

About 45 minutes east on the N2, Knysna is more than just the waterfront. Skip the mall traffic and head straight to the Heads. Park at the Eastern Head viewpoint and walk the short cliff path—you’ll see the ocean pour into the lagoon, and if you’re lucky, a pod of dolphins riding the current. For lunch, grab a seafood platter at The Drydock or a simple fish-and-chips at Ocean Basket on the water. If you’ve got time, drive up to the Knysna Forest for a leg-stretch under the yellowwoods. Return via the old Pass Road for sunset views over the water.

Plettenberg Bay: Beaches, Whales & a Brewery

Another 30 minutes past Knysna brings you to Plett. In summer, Robberg Beach is the spot—white sand, warm water, and enough space to throw a ball for the dog. In winter, skip the swim and hike the Robberg Nature Reserve trail instead. It’s a 5km loop with seal colonies, dramatic cliffs, and, between July and November, southern right whales breaching right below you. Afterwards, stop at Brazen Head for a wood-fired pizza or Moby Dick’s for a burger on the deck. If you’re into craft beer, Plett Winelands does a decent tasting platter with a view of the mountains.

Tsitsikamma: Forests, Bridges & Real Adventure

About an hour and 15 minutes from Wilderness, Tsitsikamma is where the Garden Route gets wild. The Storms River Mouth suspension bridge is the obvious stop—cross it early to beat the tour buses, then walk the short trail to the waterfall viewpoint. For a proper day out, book the Waterfall Trail (5km one way) or, if you’re feeling brave, the Big Tree walk in the ancient forest. The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour is a must if you’ve never zip-lined over indigenous forest—it’s a 2-hour rush. End at Marilyn’s Diner in Storms River Village for a proper malva pudding and coffee.

Practical Notes for the Road

  • Route: All three are on the N2, so it’s a straight shot. Leave by 8am, back for sundowners on our stoep.
  • Season: Spring (Sept-Nov) is best for whales and wildflowers. Summer is busy—book lunch spots ahead. Winter is quiet, misty, and magical.
  • Dogs: Robberg and the Knysna forest are dog-friendly on leash. Tsitsikamma’s national park is not—plan a kennel or leave them with us at the homestead.
  • Fuel: Fill up in Wilderness or George—petrol is sparse between Plett and Storms River.
  • Pack: Water, sunscreen, a windbreaker, and a cooler box for the drive back.

All three trips are easy in a day, but if you want to linger, spend the night at Wildfarm Homestead and do them as two relaxed loops. We’ve got the braai fire ready, the dogs will be waiting, and there’s nothing better than a cold one after a day of salt air and forest trails. Come see us—the Garden Route is your backyard.
