Wildfarm Backpackers isn’t just a guesthouse — it sits on a real, working off-grid homestead in the Wilderness veld on South Africa’s Garden Route. When you stay here you’re a guest on the farm, not just in a room.
Life on the homestead
Off-grid, on purpose
We run on solar power and borehole water, with gas for the kitchen and fires for the evenings. Load-shedding barely touches us — the sun does the work, the way it should on the Garden Route. It’s a slower, quieter rhythm, and guests always leave a little more relaxed than they arrived. Curious what it’s actually like? Read what to expect from an off-grid stay in Wilderness.
The dogs run the place
You’ll be greeted by our pack of dogs the moment you arrive — they’re the real farm managers, and they take their job (and their belly rubs) very seriously. Between them, the chickens and the veld, there’s always something alive happening around you.
Chickens, garden & the braai fire
Free-range chickens scratch around the homestead and supply the eggs. The veggie garden feeds the kitchen when it’s kind. And when the sun drops behind the veld, the braai fire comes alive — that’s Wilderness at its best: flames, friends, and stars you can actually see.
Follow the farm
We share the real day-to-day — the dogs, the builds, the veld, the seasons — on our YouTube channel, The WildFarm Homestead. If you love farm life, slow living and the Garden Route, come watch the farm grow. You can also browse more homestead stories in our Wilderness Life articles or the full homestead blog.
